Flip over a jar of mineral foundation or concealer and zinc oxide is often on the list, usually a few lines below mica and iron oxides. It does real work in a formula, and it has a longer history in skincare than most ingredients on that label.
Where zinc oxide comes from
Zinc oxide starts as a naturally occurring mineral, though the fine white powder used in cosmetics is refined for purity and consistency before it ever reaches a formula. The result is an inert, odorless powder that has been used in skin preparations for a very long time, long before it became a fixture in modern makeup. On an ingredient list, zinc oxide is usually listed by its plain name, though you may also see it identified by its color index number, CI 77947. Whichever way it is written, it refers to the same mineral.
Why it shows up in mineral makeup
Most people recognize zinc oxide from sunscreen or diaper cream, where it is valued for sitting on the surface of skin rather than sinking in. That same surface-sitting quality is useful in a different way in mineral makeup. Zinc oxide adds soft, semi-opaque coverage and a slightly mattifying finish, without the heavier feel that comes from wetter formulas. One thing worth being clear about: none of this makes mineral powder a sunscreen. If sun protection is part of your routine, that still needs to come from a dedicated SPF product, applied and reapplied as directed. A dusting of powder, however much zinc oxide it contains, is not a substitute.

You will sometimes see non-nano zinc oxide on an ingredient list.
