What it is
Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth's crust. After it is mined, processed, and purified, it becomes a fine, bright white powder. On ingredient lists you will see it as "titanium dioxide" or by its Color Index number, CI 77891.
It has been used as a white pigment since the 1920s, and today it appears in everything from paint and paper to toothpaste and cosmetics.
What it does in makeup
Titanium dioxide earns its place for a few reasons.
It is an opacifier, which means it makes a formula opaque. This is what gives mineral foundation its coverage, helping to even out the look of redness and uneven tone.
It is a brightener and a base pigment. Because it is such a pure white, blending it with iron oxides allows formulators to create a wide range of skin-tone shades.
And it scatters light beautifully. That light-diffusing quality is what gives mineral powder its soft-focus finish, softening the look of pores and texture.
It is also chemically stable and non-reactive on intact skin, which makes it reliable and gentle for most people.
The safety question, honestly
This is where you will find conflicting headlines, so it is worth being precise.
On the skin, the evidence is reassuring. Studies show titanium dioxide does not penetrate beyond the outermost layer of healthy skin, so it is not absorbed into the body. Both the US FDA and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety consider it safe for topical use in cosmetics at approved concentrations, and neither classifies it as carcinogenic through skin contact.
The real concern is inhalation, not skin contact. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies titanium dioxide as a possible carcinogen, Group 2B, but that classification applies specifically to breathing in high concentrations of fine airborne particles over time, primarily in workplace settings like factories. It is not a statement about wearing it on your face.
That said, it is a fair point that any loose powder creates some dust when used, and this applies to fine powders in general, not just titanium dioxide. The sensible, practical response is simple: avoid deliberately inhaling any powder product. Tap product into the lid rather than shaking it into the air, tap excess off your brush, and apply with a normal, gentle motion. This is good practice with any loose powder.
A note on non-nano
You may also come across the term non-nano. It refers to particle size. Nano particles are smaller than 100 nanometers, while non-nano particles are larger. Because non-nano particles are bigger, they stay on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed, which is why some people prefer them. The titanium dioxide in our own formulas is non-nano.
A note on sun protection
Titanium dioxide is a genuine mineral UV filter and is used in many sunscreens. But we want to be clear: the presence of titanium dioxide in a makeup product does not make it a sunscreen. Sun protection depends on concentration, even application, and specific regulated testing. For real sun defense, wear a dedicated broad-spectrum sunscreen underneath your makeup.
